When considering adopting a pet for apartment living, it’s important to take into account the animal’s noise level, activity needs, and ability to be left alone.
Small dogs are not always the best dog breeds for apartment life as they can have high energy levels and be prone to making a lot of noise. Some breeds that are well-suited for apartment living include Bulldogs, Corgis, Shih Tzus, Yorkshire Terriers, and Greyhounds.
French Bulldogs
French Bulldogs are small and laid-back, making them great for families with children.
Corgi
Corgis are friendly, social animals that are easy to exercise in a small space and don’t experience separation anxiety.
Shih Tzu
Shih Tzus are calm, attention-loving lap dogs, but they do require training to prevent excessive barking.
Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkshire Terriers, or Yorkies, are small and make good watchdogs, but they do require training and socialization as puppies to prevent barking and distrust of strangers.
Greyhound
Greyhounds are calm, friendly dogs that don’t shed much and are well-suited for active owners, but they do require extra care in cold weather.
Keep in mind that the best dog breeds for apartment life are not limited to these five breeds. Weigh each breed’s needs carefully against your ability to provide for them.
If you’re not a super active person, you shouldn’t adopt an active dog. More importantly, read your lease and speak with your landlord before adopting a dog. Many apartment communities have fees associated with pets.
